“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me’.”

-Erma Bombeck

Dear Stranger

In a world obsessed with comparisons, it is often hard to believe that you could possibly have anything to offer. Suddenly only what is deemed great is considered good enough, leaving the majority of us asking ‘What’s the point, I will never be like them?’

From the moment I heard my friend sing, I knew she was something special. However the years of negative feedback often left her feeling like throwing in the towel and getting a day job. It has taken many years to get to the point where she has decided to sing regardless of what people said, because it makes her happy.

Many of us have been there, are there. We have gifts and talents we would love to share with the world but we second guess ourselves because we are not as great as so and so. The part that we forget is we don’t have to be. What is important is how we feel when we are singing, writing or finalising a business deal. Our gifts are not limited to other peoples expectations of what they should be but a true expression who We are. To neglect that is to neglect the self.

So it matters not if you are selling out stadiums or singing to your children, publishing your next best seller or writing short stories to share with your book club or owner of a global company or a small café by the corner, all that matters is how well you used the gifts God gave you.

“In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.”

Romans 12:6-8
